March comes at the end of the southern hemisphere summer and ends Bali's November–March wet season. The weather in Bali in March is warm to hot, and still rainy, though less than in February.

There is still plenty of sun (averaging 7 hours per day) to enjoy beaches between the downpours, which fall on 20 days on average in March.

Humidity is 5% less than in February, averaging 70% — though still 10% above the ideal range, it's a sign that the rainy season is ending. Bali's March rain is heavy to moderate, with the last of the season's storms. They're over quite quickly, often falling in the afternoon or evening. There will be markedly less rain in late March.

The Best Places to Visit in Bali in March

March is still not great for visiting Bali's islands or island hopping, doing most watersports, especially diving and snorkeling (the exception is Nusa Dua), or for adventurous outdoor activities, especially volcano/mountain climbing. If you really want to do those things, consider Thailand in March, which has ideal dry-season weather.

Avoid the downpours, strong ocean currents, and rough seas, and make the most of the sunny times. To help you make the best of the weather, here are Bali's best places to visit in March:

1. Nusa Dua — Bali's Best Beach in the Wet Season

Sheltered Nusa Dua on Bali's southern peninsula east coast avoids the wet-season Bali beach spoilers (murky, choppy seas with rubbish that washes up on the beach). Unlike most of Bali, Nusa Dua enjoys clear water in March and enough in-the-know holidaymakers to give it a leisurely atmosphere.

Watersports, including diving and snorkeling, can still be enjoyed for at least part of most days in March at Nusa Dua. When it's not raining, it's sunny and hot with clear enough waters. Nusa Dua is known for its luxury resorts, which both honeymooners and families enjoy, as well as restaurants, shopping, and surfing.

2. Experience Bali Culture and Cuisine in Ubud

The cultural capital of Bali, Ubud, is good to visit even in the rainy season. You could go to Ubud Royal Palace to see the island's royal family treasures, charming architectural features, and gardens. Or catch a Balinese dance performance. Also, see its art market, which offers many souvenirs: silk scarves, light island shirts, statues, kites, and other arty items.

Another thing that is particularly recommended in Ubud (on a rainy day) is a Balinese cooking class. An Ubud Balinese chef would show you the local market, where you'd buy fresh ingredients, then you'd make some Bali cuisine. Cooking and eating delicious island food is a great way to pass the time until the sunny weather returns.

3. View Tegallalang's Flourishing Rice Terraces

The Tegallalang Rice Terraces are within 30 minutes of Ubud, making them the best to visit in the wet season. Try to get there when the sun's out, though, for stunning photography of steep-valley paddy tiers full of green growing rice and dotted with palm trees. See Bali's jungle at its most flourishing, and appreciate the harmony between island farming and nature.

The Jatiluwih Rice Terraces, which are even more amazing and World Heritage, should be visitable too in March. However, the 2-hour journey from Ubud may be affected by mudslides making it longer/undoable.

4. See Awesome Waterfalls near Ubud

March is the last month before the dry season, when you can see Bali's waterfalls at their most awesome, charged with wet-season runoff. After a downpour, head out of Ubud to see a sun-sparkling torrent, and maybe a rainbow too! The most popular waterfall near Ubud is Tibumana — a single-column cascade emptying into a jungle pool, which you can paddle in.

The mightier Tegenungan Waterfall, also about 20 minutes from Ubud, is best captured at dusk, as it's west-facing.

5. Enjoy Ubud Monkey Forest

Ubud Monkey Forest is full of macaques and small temples. Best visited when the sun is out, cloud or a little rain still won't stop you enjoying it or the monkeys. They are very bold and used to human interaction, but do be careful and follow your guide's advice, as they are semi-wild.

The monkey forest has well-paved paths and steps, and it appeals to families and nature lovers alike. It's within 10 minutes of Ubud.

Low Season Ends: Less Crowding and Cost

There is more and more pleasant weather to be enjoyed in Bali in March as the month goes on and the rainy season winds up.

Late March may be the ideal time to take advantage of the last of the off-season prices when the rains ease off and you get better weather for your money. You'll be able to enjoy quiet attractions and bargain prices in March, though prices are likely to increase from Balinese New Year, which usually falls at some point in March…

Balinese New Year and Nyepi

One very important event to note, which is almost always sometime in March, is Nyepi — local New Year's Eve in Bali, when everything stops and there is a practice of silence, reflection, and reverent abstinence from activity from 6am to 6am. Restrictions apply to tourists too.

On Nyepi, it is probably best to stay in your hotel/resort to avoid offending the locals. Outside your hotel, there will not be much in the way of service, anyway: no taxis operating, restaurants, shops, and attractions closed, etc.

• Balinese New Year starts on March 11 in 2024.

Balinese New Year, celebrating the coming of the dry season, is a complete contrast to Nyepi, with fireworks, beach parties, and feasting, which visitors are welcome to join in with. The celebrations traditionally go on for six days.

What to Wear in March

Pack light, cool, quick-drying clothing. An umbrella could provide shelter from showers or sun. You may prefer a local poncho-like waterproof for walking around in the rain.

Bring some light longer clothing to cover arms and legs for Bali's Hindu temples and religious sites, which may also help protect you from sun and mosquitoes.

UV levels are high in March (when it's not cloudy), so pack sun cream, a sunhat, and good sunglasses. Insect/mosquito repellent is recommended, especially in evenings and jungle areas.

Sandals and cool, breathable footwear are generally recommended. But, on terraced-field, jungle, and hillside paths good walking shoes/trainers are recommended. Ideally they should have a good grip in the wet/mud.
