The Best Places to Visit in Laos in April
With the celebration of Laos' New Year (April 14th–16th, 2024), April is a good time to experience traditional festival activities in Laos, such as water splashing, cleaning Buddha statues, and street parade parties. April is the hottest month of the year in Laos, and rainfall increases in the latter part of the month. It is advised to prepare for the heat and humidity, as well as crowded conditions in this month. With that in mind, here are some of the recommended places to visit in Laos in April:
1. Patuxai Park, Vientiane
As the capital city of Laos, Vientiane is a must-visit place, no matter when you come to Laos. There are numerous well-known attractions in Vientiane, and Patuxai Park is one of the best known, located at the heart of the capital. There you can walk along the snakelike paths in the park to enjoy some free time in beautiful gardens. Take some photos at the enormous, ornate, and famous Patuxai War Monument in the center of the park. The monument was built in honor of all the people who fought for the independence of Laos. In order to avoid the hot sunlight during the day, you are recommended to visit in the early morning or around sunset.
2. Buddha Park, Vientiane
Buddha Park is a place that you can't miss if you are visiting Vientiane for the first time. It is a good place to spend your free time in the afternoon and learn more about Buddhist culture. The sculpture park has more than 200 religious statues scattered around the park. Among them, the huge 40-meter-high (130-foot-high) reclining Buddha statue is the biggest sculpture. Beside the buddha sculptures, there is an amazing Hindu sculpture, which shows the king of Hindu gods riding a three-headed elephant, with other sacred Hindu deities.
3. The Kuang Si Waterfalls, Luang Prabang
With the temperature increasing to its highest, April is a good time to enjoy watery fun in Laos, which is rich in waterfalls and caves. Kuang Si Waterfalls is one of the best-known outdoor fun spots in Luang Prabang. Located south of Luang Prabang, the waterfalls cascade down from a steep hillside, on the top of which are big shallow pools. The fall is over 60 meters (200 feet). You can hire a motorcycle to ride among the beautiful villages in the area, where you can meet some local farmers. Or you can take a boat tour to cruise on the Mekong River downstream of the falls.
4. MandaLao Elephant Sanctuary, Luang Prabang
April is a good time to visit Laos' natural parks as the forest and plants turn a lush green with the first of the monsoon rains. Plus, it's cooler than in the cities. The best place to get close to nature in Luang Prabang is MandaLao Elephant Conservation. You and your kids can have some close interactions with these lovely animals. Located on the bank of the river Nam Khan, the sanctuary itself is a beautiful nature park, where you can enjoy the best of Laos' characteristic wildlife. You can run (or leisurely walk) through the jungles in search of the elephants. By bathing and feeding the elephants, you can learn more about them. The sanctuary is famed for its ethical way of caring for the elephants. So, elephant riding and other unkind activities are not allowed there.
5. Nam Xay Viewpoint, Vang Vieng
Not far from Vientiane, the city of Vang Vieng is a popular travel destination in Laos, which is famous for its hiking and trekking. Nam Xay Viewpoint in Vang Vieng is one of its best-known attractions. The viewpoint is located on the top of a steep mountain. From the summit, you can get a spectacular bird's-eye view of the natural vistas of Vang Vieng. On one side of the viewpoint, the paddy fields run far into the distance, while on the other side, you can see a wide range of mountains. Two motorbikes and a small wooden hut are the unique features of the viewpoint, where people take pictures to show they've been there.

What to Bring/Wear in April
April is quite hot in Laos in the day and warm at night. Pack summer clothes — shirts, light trousers, t-shirts, airy footwear, sunglasses... You'd probably only need light trousers and a light long-sleeve top if the air-con was strong or if sitting outside in the night.
Rainfall increases through the month, averaging 8–10 days in different parts of the country. Bring umbrellas or light, airy ponchos to keep the rain off without becoming too sweaty. A wide-brim conical hat is a local alternative that you could try!

Bangkok and Chiang Mai
In Bangkok, our guide Ann and driver "Mr. Ot" (I don't know how to spell his name) were very friendly and professional. You simply can't underestimate the value of having an English speaking guide to show you around, and a driver with a comfortable, sizeable, air-conditioned van take you from place to place. Ann taught us so much about Thailand's history, food, and religion. Mr. Ot always opened our door with a smile, and had cool towels and ice-cold bottled water for us. More

Excellent guide in Siem Reap
Our recent time spent in Siem Reap was made even more memorable by our expert guide, Som Piseth. Som was knowledgeable, attentive, flexible and super helpful - we learnt so much about Siem Reap and Cambodia in our 3 days with him. His English was excellent and his knowledge of, and pride in, his country was outstanding. We would highly recommend Som for anyone wanting an excellent guide in Siem Reap! More
